A quiet Sunday at home…

Chains
There is nothing in the world like seeing yourself clearly in the mirror, seeing yourself as you truly are. It’s time to own it… or change.
HP5
I had the day off so I made good use of the time and developed a roll of HP5 plus. It’s been sitting around since I ran it through the Electro35 I found on ebay. So far everything looks good, though I had a little trouble loading the film on the tank reel and consequently wrinkled the film somewhere along the way. This evening I scanned the roll, now just I need to do a look-over and some cleanup…
Fence
A favorite of mine from the last roll of b/w I developed.

PAD
Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted.
It’s been a long hot summer and, between that and the funk I’ve been in, it’s taken everything I have to get through the day and to post my photo-a-day. The heat beats me down, the pace at work saps my energy and with what little I have left I have to poke my head out and catch a photo…
The funk is just that. I fight the mild-grade depression from time to time. This spell has lasted longer than usual, but the cooling temperatures this week raised my spirits and brought some bounce back in my step. We’re still busy at work, but with my brightened mood it’s easier to push through the to-do list.
A few highlights from recent Photo-A-Day’s:
Darkroom Process
Most of the things I ordered for processing my own black and white film arrived today, a week later than I’d hoped. I was looking forward to a quiet week off from work and the time I needed to tinker in the kitchen “darkroom”. Alas, it’s ok. I realized I hadn’t ordered everything I needed and the new scanner hasn’t arrived so I would have been frustrated with not being able to upload pictures. I tallied everything tonight and placed another order, this time from Calumet. We’ll see how they are on turnaround after my unpleasant experience with Adorama. It would be good to have a regular supplier to deal with…
Nile Skies
Aside from an obligatory wedding tomorrow afternoon, I’m looking forward to a long and quiet weekend. I’ve taken this Monday off, extending my weekend to four days. Too bad I won’t be at the beach. Ah, well, at least there’s iced tea and the air conditioning.
We’ll probably hunker down and try to keep the excitement to a minimum. The dogs will be reacting to all the fireworks and the neighborhood’s requisite piccolo petes. Sophie will need to be reassured, Jack usually does fine, not sure how Teddy will react.
Last night we had an odd situation. One of the neighbor kids tossed a baby doll over the fence and apparently caught Teddy off guard. He was quite perturbed by the sudden arrival of something strange that looks like a human landing in his yard. He would just hunker down and very cautiously approach, slinky style, not wanting to get too close, with a deep rumble in his chest. It was just past dusk and that made it all the weirder, Cathi called me to look at the spectacle… pretty funny…
I stopped on H street on my way in to work this morning, wandering with my camera between the Padre hotel and the Nile theater, taking pictures. The sky was dusted with clouds and looked like a painting. I shot a few pictures and posted this in my PAD (Photo-A-Day) gallery.
I was pretty happy with this:
Lightroom
I slept miserably last night but awoke to cooler temperatures and an overcast sky.
After breakfast at Alice’s, Cathi and I drove Granite road to look for a photo opportunity. Not far up, I pulled to the side and got out with my camera. The skies were dark and dramatic, the rolling hills clear of oil wells, if but for this short stretch. On our way home, we stopped at the grocers and did our shopping for the week. Once home, I opened up the windows to let the house air out and to take advantage of the cool but slight breeze. These cooler temps are a nice reprieve from the sudden turn to summer we’ve had of late. I washed the patio down while Cathi put some brownies in to bake. The laundry’s almost done, the dogs are quiet and ready for their nap and I’m settling in for the afternoon.
Yesterday I stumbled on a blog website for WFMU with over a hundred versions of Stairway To Heaven posted. I sampled a few, downloaded a few others for the iPod and my drive time listening this week.
I’ve enjoyed using the beta version of Adobe Lightroom so far. It’s changed my work flow. Before, I used to load shots into Photoshop one at a time and do my editing there. I’d have to have multiple shots open in PS to do any comparison, clicking one forward, then another. Now I load the whole shoot into Lightroom, pick the shots I like, do my processing, then do an export. Each shoot is organized by date and, if need be, by subject. Exports are put into a folder inside the original shoot folder. The exports are copies of the original pictures with the nondestructive edits made inside Lightroom, usually at a lesser quality, about 90 percent on the Lightroom scale. I still edit on occasions in Photoshop, usually adding an Unsharp Mask to the photo. I’m not entirely happy with the sharpening available in Lightroom. Nor am I completely comfortable with the b/w processing, though I still have a bit of learning to do with the program. Often I’ll just do my b/w’s in Photoshop, I’m more comfortable there. I like the options of using specific RGB channels to isolate for my b/w. However, I was messing with Lightroom today and there looks to be some options for b/w that I was not aware of and I’ll have to make a point of tinkering with. So far the program looks good. I’ll need to purchase it when it becomes available.
One thing about Lightroom, using it has made me more disciplined when it comes to organization of my pictures. I have a whole year’s worth or more of shots that need to be cataloged and added to the new library, all of which also need to be organized by dates. Over the time that I’ve had my camera, and been doing PAD, most of my library is only organized by picture number…
Michael K
I had a great shoot yesterday with an old friend. Michael was visiting from Seattle and was a willing subject for a few pictures Almost everything turned out great. And I snapped off quite a few. I haven’t had time to put together a gallery yet, but I’ll post a link when I get it done.
